Around the historic heart of S\u00e9zanne, the Mails form a tree-lined belt laid out on the site of the former medieval fortifications. These promenades offer a pleasant way to walk around the old town while discovering different views of S\u00e9zanne.<br><br>Beyond the rooftops lie the surrounding hillsides, where vineyards planted mainly with Chardonnay are an immediate reminder that the town lies within the Champagne wine region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beneath these slopes, chalk plays an essential role. Characteristic of the Champagne subsoil, it provides good drainage while retaining the water the vines need. Part of the landscape visible above ground therefore has its origins beneath the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Today, S\u00e9zanne holds the Petite Cit\u00e9 de Caract\u00e8re<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> designation, which recognises and promotes its architectural and urban heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Town Rebuilt on Its History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beneath the town lies another part of its history.<br><br>S\u00e9zanne was long a thriving trading town, particularly during the time of the Champagne fairs. A less visible legacy of this medieval past still survives: an extensive network of cellars dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, once used by merchants to store their goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May 1632, a huge fire almost completely destroyed the town and its outskirts. More than 1,200 houses were lost. S\u00e9zanne was rebuilt, but many of the medieval cellars survived the disaster and became foundations for the new buildings. Beneath some of today\u2019s houses, traces of a much older town therefore remain hidden from view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint-Denis Church also survived the fire. The old fortifications, meanwhile, gradually disappeared before being filled in during the 18th century to make way for the Mails that now surround the town centre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alainchoisnet.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/sezanne-maison-pan-de-bois-768x1024.png\" alt=\"sezanne-maison-champagne\" class=\"wp-image-12541\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">S\u00e9zanne at the Heart of Two World Wars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 1914, S\u00e9zanne found itself close to one of the major sectors of the First Battle of the Marne. The French Ninth Army, commanded by General Foch, was fighting near S\u00e9zanne and in the Saint-Gond marshes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, it is difficult to imagine from the landscape that fighting on such a scale took place just a few kilometres from the town. Yet these events left a profound mark on S\u00e9zanne and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty years later, the town once again faced war. Bombed in May 1940 and subsequently occupied, S\u00e9zanne saw the emergence of a local Resistance movement before becoming, on 27 August 1944, the first town in the Marne to be liberated by American troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But discovering S\u00e9zanne from a different perspective is not only about tracing its past.
