CONTEMPORARY BRONZE SCULPTURE
An Ancient Material in Contemporary Creation
Bronze has a long history in sculpture, but its use is by no means confined to works of the past. Many artists continue to choose it today for very different kinds of work, ranging from figurative sculpture to approaches far removed from representation.
A bronze sculpture is therefore contemporary not because of its material, but because of the way the artist uses it. The subject, the choice of forms and, above all, the sensibility it conveys allow an ancient technique to find its natural place in our time.
Modern or Contemporary: What’s the Difference?
The terms “modern bronze sculpture” and “contemporary bronze sculpture” are often used to mean the same thing. In everyday language, “modern” generally refers to work that moves away from classical models and is more in keeping with current tastes.
In art history, however, “modern art” refers to a period that predates contemporary art. When referring to a living artist and work being created today, “contemporary sculpture” is therefore the more accurate term.
This distinction explains why both expressions coexist, even though, for someone looking for sculpture created today, they do not necessarily refer to two different categories.
Can Figurative Sculpture Still Be Contemporary?
Contemporary art does not require abstraction or a break with representation. A figurative work can fully belong to its time without seeking to reproduce reality faithfully.
What matters is the artist’s approach to the subject and the freedom with which it is interpreted. Some works focus on attitude, others on movement or a more inward feeling. Bronze can thus maintain a connection with an ancient tradition while expressing a contemporary sensibility.
